Communication Aid - Making choices
Children with Speech and Language Difficulties can sometimes take longer to develop their attention and play skills. This means they may struggle joining in with play activities and learning opportunities that are more structured and involve other people. Giving children a visual choice of an activity they can join in with and helping them to participate in this activity can support their development of joint attention and engagement in shared activities.
This choosing board can help to increase motivation in these children to join in with the activities on offer in the nursery/classroom/home environment. By showing them pictures/symbols of the activities available and getting them to choose which one they want, adults can help them to be at their calmest and therefore ready to play/learn.
