Now and Next Boards - Visual Routine

Some children/young people thrive on routines, structure and consistency and that can make following someone elses schedule  pretty challenging. For some children, being asked to stop what they are doing and change to something else or go somewhere else can increase their anxiety and cause them to wobble. 
 
This is why having a visual aid that shows what is happening now and what is about to happen next can be a very useful tool both in the classroom and at home. These now and next boards can be used to show a child what to expect next, what is required of them and what they have got to look forward to.
 
It works by placing two activity symbol cards on the board - one for what the child is doing first and another for what they will be doing next. This resource also includes a now, next, then board to use when the child is confident with using the now/next board. Try to keep the next activity as exciting as possible when they are just starting to use the board - this will keep the board as a fun tool for the child.
